General Information

Auditions and Registration for the 2023/2024 season are now open! 
All live audition spots are now FULL. There is still plenty of room in our programs. Submit a video recording by June 1st!

About Auditions:

Some programs require an audition to join while others do not. See below the specific audition requirements for each program. If you would like to join Evans Orchestra or Youth Symphony for the first time you must sign up for an audition before you register for the program. 

 

About Registration: 

Every member of YOCVA must register in our registration system, Jack Rabbit. Our customized Jack Rabbit member portal is manages tuition payments, attendance, policy agreements, contact information, and resource sharing.  

 

Audition Sign Up

Auditions are only required if:

  • You play a string instrument and you are NEW to Youth Symphony or Evans Orchestra. 
  • You play a wind or brass instrument and are NEW or RETURNING member of Youth Symphony. 
  • All returning Youth Symphony string players do not need to re-audition. You can register for the 23/24 season through your existing Jack Rabbit Member Portal. 
  • All returning members of Evans Orchestra (strings, winds, & brass) do not need to re-audition. You can register for the 23/24 season through your existing Jack Rabbit Member Portal. 
Live auditions will be held on:

5/23/2023 from 6:00-8:30pm
5/25/2023 from 6:00-8:30pm
5/30/2023 from 6:00-8:30pm

Recorded Auditions

Audition Requirements

 

Youth Symphony

 

  • Solo Repertoire:

    • Strings, Woodwinds, & Brass: Please prepare two contrasting pieces or orchestral excerpts which demonstrate your musicality, tone, and technical skill. Each solo selection should be no more than two minutes in length.

    • Percussion:

      • Please prepare two etudes of your choice on snare drum.

      • Then, demonstrate the following:

        1. Long roll (concert-style) – pp<FF->pp

        2. Single paradiddles

        3. Flams

        4. Drags

  • Scales:

    • Violin: D major & A melodic minor, 3 octaves

    • Viola: G major & D melodic minor, 3 octaves

    • Cello: E major & G melodic minor, 3 octaves

    • Bass: F major & A melodic minor, 2 octave minimum or as many octaves as possible

    • Flutes: C major & Db major, as many octaves as possible

    • Clarinets: E major & Db major, as many octaves as possible

    • Trumpets: B major & Ab major, 2 octaves

    • Oboe: Eb major & D major, 2 octaves

    • Bassoon: Bb major & A major, as many octaves as possible

    • French Horn: Gb major & A major, 2 octaves

    • Trombones: A major & Gb major, 2 octaves

    • Tuba: A major and Gb major, 2 octaves

Rita M. Evans Orchestra 
  • Solo Repertoire:
    • Strings, Woodwinds, & Brass: Please prepare one solo piece of music or orchestral excerpt which demonstrate your musicality, tone, and technical skill. Your solo selection should be no more than two minutes in length. 
      • Strings: Suggested level of difficult relative to Suzuki Book 3-4.  
    • Percussion:
      • Please prepare two etudes of your choice on snare drum.
      • Then, demonstrate the following:
        1. Long roll (concert-style) – pp<FF->pp
        2. Single paradiddles
        3. Flams
        4. Drags
  • Scales:
    • Violin: G Major, 3 octaves
    • Viola: C Major, 3 octaves
    • Cello: C Major,  3 octaves
    • Bass: E Major, 2 octaves.
    • Flutes: Chromatic, two and a half octaves – C to G
    • Clarinets: Chromatic, two and a half octaves – F to C
    • Trumpets: Chromatic, two octaves – G to G
    • Oboe: Chromatic, two octaves – Bb to Bb
    • Bassoon: Chromatic, two octaves – F to F
    • French Horn: Chromatic, one octave – C to C
    • Trombones: Chromatic, two octaves – F to F. 
    • Tuba: Chromatic, two octaves – F to F
Junior Strings

There is no audition to join Junior Strings. The program is open to all string players at a late-beginner level. 

Recommended Skill Level: 

  • Confident reading sheet music and playing basic rhythmic patterns. 
  • Comfortable with bow hold and fundamental bow strokes.
  • Recommended to be playing music at the relative level of Suzuki Book 2
