Chamber Music

What: The chamber music program at YOCVA is an opportunity for students to make music with their friends in a small group setting. Chamber music is often described as an equally challenging, fulfilling and versatile craft. Typically musicians in a chamber group play one-to-a-part. In the program students have the flexibility to pursue personal interests, music both within and outside the classical genre, and challenge their technical and musical growth.

Who: Chamber music is open to any intermediate to advanced student. At this time we can accept strings players, flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, trombone, french horn, and trumpet.

When: Chamber Music rehearses on Tuesday nights starting September 12, 2023.

Where: Weekly rehearsals will be held at Walker Elementary School. Performance venues for the coming year are a work-in-progress.  In past years our students have performed at the Quirk Hotel (Charlottesville), The Center at Belvedere, the UVa Rotunda, University Village, and The Colonnades retirement homes.

How: Each weekly rehearsal will be organized into two one-hour sessions. A detailed schedule will be released one week prior to the start of the program.

Sessions may include:

  • Coached rehearsal with your chamber group.
  • independent rehearsal with your chamber group.
  • A program-wide seminar or workshop.
  • Conductor-less mix-instrument large group rehearsal.

Auditions: There is no audition to join chamber music. Students are matched into chamber groups based on their current skill level, personal preference and interests. We want you to learn AND have fun! We request that students feel comfortable at an intermediate to advanced level in reading music and managing/tuning your own instrument. Students should feel confident and capable with intermediate to advanced level scales and technique relative to your instrument. Preferable students also student with a private teacher.
