The YOCVA Concerto Competition

Congratulations to our 2022 Winners!

Strings Winner: Mary McCoy

Mary McCoy is a junior who attends Wilson Memorial High School and the Shenandoah Valley Governor’s School. She has been playing the viola since she was five years old, as well as studying piano and voice. Mary currently enjoys taking lessons with Dr. Johanna Beaver, and also plays in the Waynesboro Symphony Orchestra. She is honored to be performing with the Youth Orchestras of Central Virginia, and grateful to Mrs. Thomas and the Youth Symphony for creating such a wonderful rehearsal environment. In addition, Mary would like to thank her parents for having confidence in her, her brothers for supporting her, and her teacher for challenging her and giving excellent guidance. She is thrilled to share Max Bruch’s evocative Romanze for Viola and Orchestra, and plans to continue studying viola in the future.

Winds Winner: Claire Engler

Claire Engler is a 16 year old junior in the MESA program at Albemarle High School. She discovered her passion for flute while attending Charlottesville High School Orchestra’s production of Peter and the Wolf when she was 7 years old. Despite her parents’ skepticism, she convinced them she was not too young for lessons and, soon after, began studying with Angela Kelly. Claire has been a member of YOCVA for almost nine years, including flute ensembles, Evans Orchestra and Youth Symphony. She has received first place awards with Hampton Roads Flute Faire, Flute Society of Washington, and a junior camp scholarship with Wednesday Music Club. She has been in the All-District Band top ensemble since 6th grade and was the principal flute this year. She attended Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp for four summers, including the Masterworks Orchestra in 2018 and as principal flute in the International Youth Symphony Orchestra in 2019 where she traveled through France and Germany, staying with host families for a month. Last summer she attended Interlochen Arts Camp flute intensive week. At AHS, under the direction of Andrew LaPrade, she has been in the jazz ensemble, spring musical pit orchestra, and wind ensemble. She also plays the marimba in the marching band. When not engaged in musical pursuits, academics, or hanging out with friends, she can often be found volunteering with Albemarle County Fire Rescue and is currently taking Fire 1 with plans to become EMT certified this summer.  Claire also enjoys volunteering at Camp Holiday Trails, where she was a camper for eight summers, inspiring other children with type 1 diabetes and other chronic illnesses. She plans to continue her passion for flute in college as a member of music ensembles while studying pre-med.

The Youth Orchestras of Central Virginia Concerto Competition was made possible through the generous support of the Bama Works Fund of the Dave Mathews Band administered by the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation. The competition took place Saturday, January 15th at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Charlottesville VA.
