Rita M. Evans Orchestra

Prospective musicians must perform a live or video audition with the following solo selections and scales to be admitted to Evans Orchestra. After the initial audition and acceptance members can re-join each subsequent year with no audition.   

• Solo Repertoire 

  • Violin: Please prepare one piece of about two minutes in length, with level of difficulty equal to Suzuki Book 4 (i.e. comparable to Vivaldi’s Concerto in A minor). The solo should demonstrate facility in third position and at least a beginning vibrato.

  • Viola & Cello: Please prepare one piece comparable to a selection from Suzuki Book 3. The solo should demonstrate facility in third position (viola) and second, third, and fourth positions (cello) and at least a beginning vibrato.

  • Bass: Please prepare one piece with a level of difficulty equal to Suzuki Book 3 or 4. The solo should demonstrate facility in second, third, and fourth positions and at least a beginning vibrato.

  • Woodwinds & Brass: Please prepare two contrasting pieces of your choosing, each about one minute in length.

• Scales

  • Violin: G major, 3 octaves

  • Viola: C major, 3 octaves

  • Cello: C major, 3 octaves

  • Bass: E major, 2 octaves

  • Flute: Chromatic, two and a half octaves – C to G

  • Oboe: Chromatic, two octaves – Bb to Bb

  • Bassoon: Chromatic, two octaves – F to F

  • Clarinet: Chromatic, two and a half octaves – F to C

  • French Horn: Chromatic, one octave – C to C

  • Trumpet: Chromatic, two octaves – G to G

  • Trombone: Chromatic, two octaves – F to F

  • Tuba: Chromatic, two octaves – F to Fa live
